A 3D photo is a normal picture that moves as if it had real depth: the person in front shifts more than the wall behind them, like looking through a window. It is the effect Facebook made popular with its 3D photos and the one you see in scroll-stopping Reels. A few years ago you needed a phone with portrait mode or a designer with After Effects to make one. Today an AI model can do it from any single photo, in your browser, in about 20 seconds.
This guide shows how to turn a flat picture into a 3D photo online for free, which photos give the strongest effect, and what to do with the result.
How a 3D photo effect works
Every 3D photo tool does the same two things. First it builds a depth map: a grayscale version of your picture where bright means near and dark means far. Then it uses that map to move parts of the image by different amounts when the view changes. Near pixels move more, far pixels move less. That difference is called parallax, and your brain reads it as depth.
Older apps took the depth from a phone's dual camera. Modern tools such as Deep Photo use a neural network trained on millions of images, so they can estimate depth from any photo: old scans, screenshots, pictures from the web, drawings and AI art.
How to make a 3D photo online, step by step
- Open the converter. Go to the Deep Photo homepage. The upload box is at the top. No account is needed to try it.
- Upload your photo. Click the box, drag a file onto it or paste an image from the clipboard. JPG, PNG and WEBP work.
- Wait for the depth. The AI builds the depth map right in your browser. It usually takes 10 to 30 seconds, faster on a computer with a good graphics card.
- Look at it in 3D. Move your mouse or finger over the picture. The photo tilts with real depth.
- Save, share or export. With a free account you can save the photo to your library, get a share link and an embed code for your website. To post it on social media, export an HD MP4 with a smooth camera move.

Make a 3D photoWhich photos make the best 3D photos
The effect comes from differences in distance, so the best pictures have a clear subject with some space behind it.
- Portraits and selfies with a background a few meters away. Hair and shoulders separate nicely from the scene.
- Pets, especially close-ups with a blurred background.
- Landscapes with a foreground: a rock, a tree, a railing or a person in front of the view. A flat horizon alone has little depth to show.
- Products on a table or in a room, shot slightly from above.
- Streets and interiors with lines going into the distance.
Photos that work less well: flat documents, screenshots of text, pictures shot straight at a wall, and very busy scenes where nothing stands out.
What you can do with a 3D photo
Post it to Reels, TikTok and Shorts
Social apps don't play interactive 3D, so you post a short video of it instead: the camera slowly moves around your photo. Deep Photo exports an HD MP4 in 9:16 for Reels, TikTok and Stories, 1:1 for the feed, or the original proportions. See our guide to 3D photo videos for TikTok and Reels for ideas that get views.
Put it on your website
An interactive 3D photo makes a hero image, a product page or a portfolio stand out. Deep Photo gives you an embed code that works on any site, plus a WordPress block. Here is how to add a 3D parallax photo to a website.
Share a link
Every saved 3D photo has its own link that opens the interactive version on any phone or computer. Friends don't need an app.
3D photo vs 3D model vs 3D video
People often mix these up when they search for "photo to 3D":
- 3D photo (2.5D, parallax): your exact picture with depth added. It looks real because it is your photo, and it moves a little in every direction. This is what Deep Photo makes.
- 3D model: a full object made of a mesh that you can spin around 360° or 3D print. The back side has to be invented, so it rarely looks like the original photo.
- 3D video: the same depth effect on moving footage, frame by frame. Read how to convert a 2D video to 3D or try the video to 3D converter.
Other ways to get a 3D photo effect
On a recent iPhone, iOS 26 can turn some photos into Spatial Scenes on the Lock Screen and in the Photos app; we compare it in how to make 3D photos on iPhone. Video editors like CapCut have a "3D zoom" effect, which is a different, simpler trick that we explain in 3D zoom effect without CapCut. The advantage of an online tool is that it works on any device, with any photo, and gives you a link, an embed and a video from the same result.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make a 3D photo from a normal picture?
Yes. An AI depth model estimates how far away every pixel is, so a single ordinary photo from any phone or camera is enough. You don't need a dual camera, a depth sensor or several shots.
Is it free to make a 3D photo online?
On Deep Photo, making and viewing 3D photos on the homepage is free and needs no sign-up. A free account saves up to 3 photos with share links and embeds. HD MP4 export is part of the paid plans.
Is a 3D photo the same as a 3D model?
No. A 3D photo keeps your picture and adds depth, so it moves with a parallax effect when you tilt or scroll it. A 3D model is a full object you can rotate all the way around or 3D print. Deep Photo makes 3D photos, not printable models.
