How to convert 2D video to 3D: 4 ways compared

Turn a normal video into 3D for social media, VR or a 3D model. We compare AI online converters, stereoscopic SBS converters, After Effects and Blender, and video to 3D model tools.

"Convert video to 3D" can mean three very different things: a video that moves with depth on a normal screen, a stereoscopic movie for VR headsets and 3D glasses, or a 3D model of an object you filmed. Each needs a different tool. This guide explains the options, so you can pick the right one in a minute instead of testing five apps.

First: which kind of 3D do you need?

GoalWhat you getWatch it on
3D effect for social media or a website2.5D parallax video with real depthAny screen
3D movie for VR or a 3D TVStereoscopic side-by-side (SBS) or anaglyph videoVR headset, 3D TV, 3D glasses
3D model of an object or a placeMesh or Gaussian splat3D viewer, game engine, 3D printer

All of them start the same way: working out how far away things are in each frame. That is a depth map.

1. AI online converter (fastest, for social media)

An online video to 3D converter estimates depth for every frame with AI and plays the video back as a 3D surface. When the view moves, near things shift more than far ones, so the video looks three-dimensional on a phone or a laptop with no glasses.

With Deep Photo's video to 3D converter:

  1. Upload a clip of up to 15 seconds (MP4, MOV or WEBM).
  2. The AI builds depth for every frame in your browser and smooths it over time so it doesn't flicker. It takes about a minute for a 10-second clip on a computer with a modern graphics card.
  3. Watch the interactive 3D video, which turns with your mouse or finger, with the original sound.
  4. Download an HD MP4 in 9:16, 1:1 or the original proportions for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, or keep it in your library.

Best for: creators, ads, product clips, music edits, travel videos. Limits: short clips, and a 2.5D effect rather than a stereoscopic movie.

2. Stereoscopic converters (for VR and 3D TVs)

If you want to watch a whole movie in a VR headset, you need a stereoscopic video: two slightly different views, one per eye, usually placed side by side (SBS). Desktop apps such as Owl3D and the open-source iw3 tool use the same kind of AI depth estimation, then render a left and a right view for every frame.

Best for: long videos and movies you will watch in a headset. Limits: you need a powerful computer with a good GPU, conversion of a long film can take hours, and the result looks flat on a normal screen, so it is not useful for social media.

3. After Effects or Blender (full control)

Editors build the effect by hand: generate a depth map for each frame, use it to displace the footage on a 3D plane, then animate a camera. In After Effects that means depth plugins and the camera tools; in Blender, a displaced plane and a camera move.

Best for: professional edits where you want to control every detail. Limits: slow, expensive and needs real skills. Temporal flicker of the depth is your problem to solve.

Tip: You can mix methods: make the 3D clip online in a minute, then drop the MP4 into your editor to add titles, music and cuts.

4. Video to 3D model (photogrammetry and splats)

If you searched for "video to 3D model", you probably want to scan a real object or room. Apps that do photogrammetry or Gaussian splatting take a video where you walk around an object and rebuild it as a 3D model you can rotate, use in a game engine or 3D print.

Best for: scanning objects, rooms and products. Limits: you have to film the object from all sides; it cannot turn an existing clip of people or action into a 3D video.

Tips for better 3D video conversion

  • Choose clips with depth. A subject in front of a distant background (a dancer on a street, a car on a road, a drone shot with trees in front) gives the strongest effect.
  • Steady footage works best. Fast shaky moves and heavy motion blur make depth harder to estimate.
  • Avoid big reflections. Windows, mirrors and water confuse depth models.
  • Keep it short for social media. 5 to 15 seconds is ideal for a Reel or a TikTok.

So which should you use?

For a 3D effect you will post or put on a site, use an online AI converter: it takes a minute and works on any screen. For a VR movie night, use a stereoscopic SBS converter. For a 3D scan of an object, use a photogrammetry or splat app. And if you only have a photo, make a 3D photo online instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI convert a normal video to 3D?

Yes. AI depth models estimate how far every pixel is in every frame. With that depth, a video can be shown with a parallax 3D effect on any screen, or turned into a stereoscopic side-by-side video for VR headsets and 3D TVs.

What is the easiest way to convert a video to 3D online?

Upload the clip to an online converter such as Deep Photo. It builds depth for every frame in your browser and gives you an interactive 3D video and an HD MP4 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts.

Do I need 3D glasses to watch a converted 3D video?

Not for a parallax (2.5D) 3D video: it shows depth through motion on any normal screen. Stereoscopic 3D videos (side-by-side or anaglyph) need a VR headset, a 3D TV or 3D glasses.
